How to change your outgoing email port (9/5/12)

Outgoing Port Instructions

This page provides specific instructions to change the outgoing port.  You would change the outgoing port only if you are on a network that blocks the standard port, for example CenturyLink, Charter Cable, a public WiFi hotspot, etc.

If you use a computer or tablet you may need to do this.  Normally smartphones don't need this unless you connect by WiFi.

Outlook/OutlookExpress

All versions of Outlook or Outlook Express for Windows use a similar screen for the port settings, which looks like the following picture.  Sometimes the Outgoing Port is listed first, sometimes second.  Please change the port number as shown.

Outgoing Port Settings

The following links tell you how to get to this dialog:

  • Open Microsoft Outlook 98 .
  • Click on Tools up on the top.
  • Click on Services on the bottom of the drop-down menu.
  • Click on Internet E-mail then click Properties
  • Click Advanced.

  • Open Microsoft Outlook 2000 .
  • Click on Tools up on the top.
  • Click on Accounts on the bottom of the drop-down menu
  • Click on your account then Properties on the right.
  • Click Advanced.

  • Open Microsoft Outlook .
  • Click on Tools up on the top.
  • Click on Email Accounts on the bottom of the drop-down menu.

  • Select View or change existing e-mail accounts and click Next.
  • Select your email account  and click Change.
  • Click on More Settings, then Advanced.

  • Open Microsoft Outlook, you may have an icon on your desktop or you may find it by clicking on the Start button on the bottom left-hand corner and then clicking on Programs.
  • Click on Tools up on the top.
  • Click on Account Settings... on the bottom of the drop-down menu.

  • Click on your account then click Change (the icon is above the account list).
  • Click on More Settings, then Advanced.

  • Open Microsoft Outlook.
  • Click on the File tab, then Account Settings, then Account Settings.
  • Click on your account then click Change (the icon is above the account list).
  • Click on More Settings, then Advanced.

  • Open Outlook 2011.
  • Using the toolbar at the top of the screen, click on Tools, then Accounts.
  • Select your account, then in the area Outgoing Server check the box "Override Default Port" and change 25 to 587.

  • Open Outlook Express.
  • Click on Tools up on the top.
  • Click on Accounts on the bottom of the drop-down menu.

  • Select your account and click Properties, then Advanced.

WindowMail/LiveMail

All versions of Windows Mail/ Windows Live Mail use a similar screen for the port settings, which looks like the following picture.  Sometimes the Outgoing Port is listed first, sometimes second.  Please change the port number as shown.

  • Open Windows Mail.
  • Click on Tools up on the top.
  • Click on Accounts on the bottom of the drop-down menu.

  • On the next screen select your account then click Properties.
  • Click on the Advanced tab.

  • Open Windows Live Mail 
  • Find your account name on the left and right click on it, then left click on Properties.
  • Click on the Advanced tab.

  • Open Windows Live Mail
  • Find your account name on the left and right click on it, then left click on Properties.
  • Click on the Advanced tab.

Thunderbird

  • Open Thunderbird, you may have an icon on your desktop or you may find it by clicking on the Start button on the bottom left-hand corner and then clicking on Programs.
  • Click on Tools up on the top.
  • Click on Account Settings... near the bottom of the drop-down menu.

  • Click on Outgoing Server, then click the Edit button. Change the Port to 587 as shown:

  • Click OK, then OK again, and then you're finished!

Apple

  • Open Mail.
  • Go to Mail | Preferences.
  • Click on Accounts.
  • Select your account on the left.  In the Account Information tab on the right go to Outgoing Server.
  • Use the drop down button and select Edit SMTP server list.
  • Click on your server, then go to the Advanced tab.
  • If you see the option "Use default ports (25, 465, 587)" make sure that option is checked.  If you don't see that, just fill in 587 in the Port box.

  • On the main screen tap Settings

  • Now tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars

  • Click on your account, then in the account settings screen, tap the name of your outgoing server, for example mail.gobrainstorm.net.
  • Now tap the name of the server again, and you should see the following screen.  Change the port to 587 as shown.

  • On the main screen tap Settings
