August 2007 Newsletter

Dear Valued Brainstorm Customers

As some of you may already know, on Monday, August 20, a significant portion of the Qwest network infrastructure was completely disabled for most of the day as a result of damage to a major traffic carrying cable at their Denver facilities.

Living in the Information Age as we do with growing reliance upon complex and continually evolving technology, we recognize the huge impact an outage can have, especially for businesses. The hard truth is that network outages can and sometimes do happen, even the best networks can be adversely affected by outside influences.

With this potential reality in mind, Brainstorm Internet has anticipated our customers’ growing reliance on their data connection to the Internet and responded proactively by dedicating significant resources to incorporating redundant and unassociated paths to the Internet into the core of our network infrastructure, becoming Durango’s ONLY truly redundant network. With multiple independent backbone connections to the Internet, Brainstorm is able to route traffic through an alternate carrier if a primary carrier is experiencing a problem, keeping our customers up and running when others are down.

How likely is it that our customers will notice the benefit of this redundancy? Well, as they say, the proof is in the pudding. On last Monday, when many of the western states served by Qwest were completely down, Brainstorm Internet customers (with the exception of those who use Qwest to connect to the Brainstorm network) were up, online and even unaware that a major outage was happening.

In addition to our redundant connections to the Internet, Brainstorm also offers redundant connections all the way to our customers’ premises. By utilizing our SOAR/T1 redundant package, businesses can enjoy peace of mind having dual, powerful connections and our 99.9% uptime guarantee. Never before have such multiple levels of redundancy and connectivity been available in Durango, and it is only available from Brainstorm Internet. We would be happy to speak with you about your current connection and how to ensure it is always up and running through our redundant connection options.

As a smaller, local company we are proud of our ability to provide fast, reliable connectivity and superior customer service to the businesses and people that put their trust in us.

We thank you for your business and know we work hard every day to continue to reward your faith and support of Brainstorm.

-Your Brainstorm Internet Team

Fire and Rescue Goes High Tech

Brainstorm Internet recently installed hardware and software on the Durango Fire & Rescue Authority's Mobile Command Post to provide it with high capacity wireless broadband technology. This system will now be used as the primary Internet connection, replacing an older satellite dish. Internet communication is an integral component when researching a hazardous materials incident or other technical aspects of an emergency response.

The older satellite dish provided good service but there were instances of malfunctioning and slow uploading speeds. Brainstorm's Chief Executive Officer Jay Marqua and President Russ Elliott met with Durango Fire & Rescue Authority staff with an offer to provide the new SOAR Wireless Transport, Brainstorm's "Fiber In The Sky", which is the latest in high-capacity wireless broadband technology. The service provides redundant high speed communication technology.

Network Engineer Brian Ide and Broadband Sales Manager Chris Zielinski installed the receiving hardware on the Command Post. Brainstorm now provides Internet service free to the Fire Authority.

Brainstorm Internet continues to show dedication to our community and people in it by providing first responders with tools to do their job more effectively. We greatly appreciate their donation of this service and are thankful for the professional installation of the equipment.

Tech Tip: Adjusting Your Personal SPAM Filtering Settings

Brainstorm Internet uses the Barracuda SPAM filtering system to significantly reduce the junk mail making it to our customers mailboxes. We have intentionally set the default filtering settings to moderate levels for all customers to avoid legitimate email form being filtered out as SPAM. Even at moderate levels, our filtering process removes more than 90% of junk mail before it ever has a chance to get to your Inbox. However, when faced with the junk mail that does make it through, some of our customers have expressed a desire for more aggressive filtering. Did you know that you can access your individual settings on the Barracuda SPAM Filter and create custom settings? We have placed clear and easy to follow instructions on our website for your convenience. Go to http://gobrainstorm.net/barracuda/index.htm and learn how you can cut down even further on the unwanted email that you may be receiving.
