Spam
|
| If you are like most internet users these
days, when you check your email, your inbox is inundated with dozens or
even hundreds of unsolicited junk mail, also known as Spam. Spam is a
constant nuisance and something that you shouldn’t have to put up
with. Our technical team has come up with a few ways to help you escape
the annoyances of Spam this summer!
-Create multiple email accounts. Have one account for personal use, another
for business use and a separate account for online shopping, chat rooms,
website accounts. This account will be where most of your spam ends up.
-If you have an existing email address that is getting a lot of spam,
you can download a program from www.mailwasher.net
that is helpful in filtering unwanted mail.
-There is also a “spamkiller” made by McAfee that is quite
good and is available for purchase at Office Depot.
-In a new low, spammers are now abusing a seemingly-innocuous feature
in Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems to place pop-up messages on systems
with high-speed internet connections. The NET command is used to send
such messages (e.g. net send * Hello World), and the messenger service
(different than Windows Messenger) allows users to receive such text messages.
By default, it is running and active on all Windows 2000 and Windows XP
systems. Here's the easiest way to turn it off: Just do a find on the
file, 1. Open the Services window (click Start > Run > type services.msc).
2. Double-click the Messenger entry in the list. 3. Click Stop to close
the service. 4. Select Disabled from the Startup type list to prevent
it from loading automatically the next time Windows starts. 5. Close the
Services window when you're done. Once it has been disabled, you will
no-longer receive such messages. Please note that many firewalls also
prevent this type of data from reaching your computer in the first place,
but it certainly can't hurt to turn off the service anyway. |
