Frequently Asked Questions About Barracuda SPAM Filtering

Q: How can I get into the Barracuda Control Panel?
A: The easiest way is to click on any of the links in the daily Quarantine report that you receive in your email.

Q: I've deleted all the Barracuda emails. How can I log into the control panel?
A: Go to http://spamfilter.brainstorminternet.net:8000/ You will need the password that you were assigned.

Q: I've forgotten my password, or I never got one, so I still can't log in. What do I do?
A: Go to http://spamfilter.brainstorminternet.net:8000/ and click Create New Password and another one will be emailed to you.

Q: Can I change my password to something that's easier to remember?
A: Yes. Log into the Barracuda control panel. Click on the Preferences tab, then click Password.

Q: I have Norton AntiSpam and it is filtering my daily Barracuda summaries. What can I do to prevent this from happening?
A: Start up Norton AntiSpam. Click the Status & Settings tab. Click AntiSpam. Click Configure. Click Allowed List tab. Click Add button. In the 'Email Address' box, enter noreply@brainstorminternet.net. Click OK, and OK again.

Q: I have Eudora for email and the Spam Quarantine summary doesn't display correctly. What can I do?
A: In Eudora, click Tools, Options, then scroll down to Viewing Mail and click on that. On the right side check “Use Microsoft's viewer” and click OK.

Q: I don't want to get the daily Barracuda summaries any more. What can I do?
A: Log into the Barracuda control panel. Click on the Preferences tab, then click Quarantine Settings. Set the Notification Interval to "Never" and click Save Changes.

Q: I see that spam is being filtered but I'm still getting a lot of spam. What can I do?
A: Log into the Barracuda control panel. Click on the Preferences tab, then click Spam Settings. FIRST you must set Use System Defaults to "No" and click Save Changes. THEN you can use the slider to set Quarantine Score to a lower number (lower is MORE filtering, greater is LESS filtering). Then click Save Changes again.

Q: What do those other settings do? Tag Score and Block Score?
A: Tag Score by default is disabled. It is normally not that useful. We recommend you leave it disabled. This feature does not block spam, it just tags the subject line by inserting the word “[BULK]” in the front of the subject for emails which meet a certain spam score. The Block Score by default is also disabled. We recommend you leave it disabled. If you enable the Block Score the system will silently discard emails which exceed the Block Score so you have no chance to recover them.

Q: I don't want Barracuda, I want all my email with nothing filtered. How do I do that?
A: Log into the Barracuda control panel. Click on the Preferences tab, then click Spam Settings. FIRST you must set Use System Defaults to "No" and click Save Changes. THEN use the slider to set Quarantine Score to 10 (disabled) and click Save Changes.

Q: In my Quarantine Inbox I see some stuff at the top with an Apply Filter button.
A: That is supposed to make it easier to find emails especially if you have several pages of them in your Quarantine. For example you could set it to "IS From contain susiecustomer@gobrainstorm.net" and click Apply Filter. That would show you any emails received from susiecustomer@gobrainstorm.net.

Q: In my Quarantine Inbox I see a slider at the top with dates at both ends. What does that do?
A: That is supposed to make it easier to find emails if you know approximately when they were sent. You can also just use the page by page feature at the top right.

Q: Do I need to click Delete on all those emails each day?
A: No. Unlike the old system, the messages in your quarantine don't count against your quota. Furthermore they will be automatically deleted after 16 days. So you never need click Delete.

Q: So what should I click on in those daily emails?
A: If you want to read a message click Deliver. If you want to always read emails from that person click Whitelist. That's about it.

Q: What does it mean to Whitelist and Blacklist?
A: Whitelist means that in the future messages from that email address will never be Quarantined. Blacklist means that in the future messages from that email address will be silently discarded with no chance of recovery. Blacklist is ineffective against spammers but could be used against specific individuals that you no longer want to receive emails from such as ex-boyfriends, in-laws, etc.

Q: I want to edit one of the addresses in my Whitelist but I don't see how. What do I do?
A: You can't edit a Whitelist entry. You have to delete it and create a new one.

Q: When I log in to my webmail I still see the options for Whitelist and Blacklist and the spamfiltered folder. Do those options still work?
A: No. They will eventually be removed.
